Foreword

Frances O'Grady, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress

On Saturday 18 June, trade union members will be taking to the streets to demand action on the cost of living – a new deal for working people – and a pay rise.

We are delighted that Labour Party Graphic Designers (LPGD) are working with us to harness the creative talents of the labour movement in support of this demonstration.

Families across the country are bearing the brunt of the cost-of-living storm. Everything is going up but our wages.

Ministers partied while people died. Now they do nothing while living standards plummet and P&O lays off hundreds of workers on the spot.

Enough is enough. We demand better. It’s time for a new deal for working people – real help with energy bills – and a pay rise.

On 18 June, in London, let’s tell this government: we demand better. We'll be marching with thousands of people from all over the UK, followed by a rally in Parliament Square. Everyone is welcome.

Previous LPGD art packs have covered topics including the housing crisis, the climate emergency, supporting key workers, Black Lives Matter, unemployment and the NHS. These issues – and many others – are the reasons why trade union members will be protesting on 18 June.

Trade unions have a long history of using symbolic imagery to bring our campaigns to life. Great art and great design inspire and motivate working people to win their campaigns and disputes. Most often, this has taken the form of intricate banners carried by trade union members as they marched for workers’ rights. In 2022, the jpeg is as powerful as the banner!

We are grateful for the wonderful designs that have been produced for this art pack.

Call us old fashioned, but we would also like to display these excellent designs off-screen. So we will be producing copies of some of the designs as placards for marchers to proudly carry into Parliament Square during our We Demand Better march.

The We Demand Better march will assemble at Portland Place, London at 11am on Saturday 18 June. Our rally will begin at 1pm in Parliament Square. You can find more information at: https://www.tuc.org.uk/NationalDemo18June

We would love for you to attend this demonstration. We are demonstrating for better pay and improved workers’ rights. For action on the cost-of-living crisis, including on spiralling housing and energy costs. For high quality, well-funded public services. Against racism and discrimination.  We are marching for change - because we deserve better.

Please share these designs far and wide. And please join us in London on 18 June.
